A Season Away

Italian nobles and travelers have marveled at the northern Tuscan city of Lucca for centuries, building amazing summer residences here. Far enough away from the often-crowded Florence, Lucca is a walled city of about 90,000 that make it a perfect location for an extended holiday: close to the seaside towns of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi and the hiking of the Apuane Alps, an hour by train to Florence and slightly more than that to Chianti. Known for its superb olive oil and antiques markets, it is also a wonderful walking city, where you can easily become a part of the fabric of the community.
